Objectives of the session:
The objectives of this session are to consider the opportunities and benefits of establishing an EDCTP Alumni Association, in particular to:
South-South networking of institutions and scientists is a key objective of the current EDCTP programme that was supported through:
Initial consultations with EDCTP-funded fellows have indicated that establishing an Alumni of EDCTP-funded fellows would provide a useful platform to enhance South-South cooperation between African scientists funded by EDCTP with the aim of promoting African scientific leadership. Several other funding agencies, such as WHO-TDR and the Wellcome Trust have developed mechanisms for tracking and connecting their fellows.
Previous networking activities hosted by EDCTP outside grants
In the past, EDCTP has piloted the following tools for networking and interaction among scientists:
a) EDCTP listserv: Subscription on the listserv was optional and was targeted to all scientists and grantees interested in discussing EDCTP business and not just fellows. This was discontinued because the level of participation and exchange was suboptimal
b) Partners seeking web platform: This tool was provided on the EDCTP website. It was intended to assist potential EDCTP grant applicants to look for collaborators both in Africa and Europe. Experience shows that this tool was rarely used.
What EDCTP can offer
EDCTP is capable of providing similar platforms as mentioned above for the Fellowship Alumni. However strong recommendations are required from this session on how the hosted Alumni can be kept vibrant and serving the intended purpose of networking EDCTP funded fellows or with the inclusion of fellows funded by other agencies but working within research remits. Alternatively this session should provide clear recommendation and timelines for a different system than can be hosted within or outside EDCTP.
